Indie Author Interview – Lawrence Helliwell, Author of The Crash Team
My latest author, Lawrence Helliwell, made his debut last week with his thoroughly addictive novel which shines a much-needed (and often hilarious) light on the world of general practice, medicine, corruption and relationships. I caught up with Lawrence to find out what he thought about self-publishing and how it felt to see his book on the Amazon store.
Congratulations, Lawrence! The Crash Team is now available on the Amazon bookstore. How did it feel to see it for the first time?
A mix of pride and panic, in case it was considered utter drivel!
Can you briefly tell us about your book and why you felt compelled to write it?
Thirty years in medicine have left me with some wonderful memories along with a few scars. It felt cathartic to be able to tell the tale of three imperfect doctors.
Have you always wanted to become an author?
Not at all. I intended to become a vet originally after reading James Herriot’s books and failing the police recruit’s eyesight test.
What made you take that leap and publish your book?
The encouragement of my wonderful wife, two fellow doctors who had both had a very positive writing experience, and an ex-secretary who is one of the most creative geniuses I have ever met.
Have you any more book plans in the pipeline?
Possibly, especially if the first book makes people smile. Though I may need a new battery for my phone first (I wrote most of it as ‘notes’).
What advice would you offer other aspiring authors who want to self-publish their books?
A patient of mine had a tattoo along his arm saying, ‘Never regret something that once made you smile.’ He was right. Go for it! Also, pick an inspiring editor/publisher like I did. It’ll steady the stage fright.
Thanks very much, Lawrence! Very best of luck with your book!
