Amazon Author Interview with H A May, author of
The Chronicles of Leaf Series
Congratulations on the publication of book two, The Quest for the Half-Stone. How does it feel to see another book added to your fantastic Chronicles of Leaf series?
Thank you for all your expert help with The Quest for the Half-Stone. It feels great to have completed the second book in the story, and I’m looking forward to publishing the third with you, as yet untitled.
You’re welcome. You know how much I love your books!
How long did it take you to write and finalise the second book? And how do you manage to fit it in around your busy schedule?
Books One and Two were half-written already, as I’d had the idea for the story for a very long time and written a very long-winded (and terrible) first draft. I split this into three but didn’t finish this properly, so the third book was very sketchy. The first two parts became the first and second book, but the third has yet to be written. I think the two books must have taken about five years overall to get to this point. I finished book two in just over a year after umpteen drafts.
Fantasy is a tricky genre to write, so how do you manage to create such a convincing setting, characters, storyline and add those all-important elements of magic and fantasy to make it work so well?
I’ve always loved fantasy, from The Borrowers and Lord of the Rings to Dune and Cloud Atlas. I think to write fantasy you must have three basic things before you even begin to write: a pressing urge to tell a story; a busy imagination; and enough time to concentrate and bring the story into the light. And that’s before any writing!
Then you need to put yourself into the world you create and allow your characters to live and interact there. The world must be detailed, and every element must work together. Quite a tough job, really.
Do you have plans for more books in the series?
There is definitely another book on the way to finish this story, but perhaps the world of Leaf will produce more adventures for Jinny and her dragon. It’s an organic thing which will grow as it will. I hope there will be more, and only time will tell.
Thanks so much, H A May.
And congratulations again on your continuing success.
ABOUT THE LATEST BOOK: The Quest for the Half-Stone
Here in Leaf, a world which boasts three sources of magic, a prophecy is in full swing.
Dragons are extinct, yet Sprout breathes and flourishes – and Jinny Morai is a new Mage. Yet the world is still blighted by a shadowy evil.
To combat this, a potent source of magic is needed, so her ancient amulet needs to be made whole. Perhaps the Talisman may contain magic strong enough to save Leaf, but the lost half will have to be found.
Now a hazardous quest is in the offing – but where to look?
